PPE for Skimming

Guys, in the Brass and Copper business, we do a lot of skimming of the induction furnaces. The operators wear  Aluminized jackets. They find them heavy and cumbersome. Like to know what members are using in place of Aluminized jackets when exposed to liquid metal.  Philippe Belanger

Chemistry Lab Management

How does your organization staff the management of your chemistry lab? Is this part of operations or another department?  Who is specifically focused on accurate, repeatable, reliable chemistry results provided to the melt shop / caster (not the persons or positions running the tests)?

EBT End Block Spalling

We’ve been experiencing early head-stone failures at ~50 heats, 3 times this year so far.  We normally get 120-150 heats between exchanges.  After tapping crown removal, the heat affected refractory will readily chip and spall out chunks.  Headstone is 70% MgO, 15% Graphite with Al+Si metallics for oxidation protection.  Anyone seen this before?  Any ideas??

Electrode shoe getting hot.

Has anyone ran into issues in the past with their copper shoe’s contact pads on their mast heads getting hot during operations? We’ve struggled with this the last couple years, and have had to change them out a lot. We have gotten a lot of debris build up at times, and we do inject lime/carbon […]

Operation during high power prices

Does anyone change the EAF power program or the pace of the shop to run differently when electricity is very expensive from how you run during periods of normal/low pricing? What sorts of changes do you make?  I’m specifically asking about situations where the furnace continues operations, not when/whether to shut down. Thanks!
